Central Research Questions
This thesis is led by Madita Maria Naumann and explores the distribution, occupancy, and habitat preferences of Megachile lagopoda through the following questions: What is the current occupancy of M. lagopoda across various habitats in Östergötland? How do patch size and isolation influence the presence and abundance of this species? And which pollen plants are essential to the species, and how available are they across different habitats?

This research investigates the distribution, occupancy, and habitat preferences of the hairy-footed leafcutter bee, Megachile lagopoda, in Östergötland, with a particular focus on the effects of patch size and isolation, as well as its reliance on specific pollen plants. The project emphasizes the importance of understanding habitat preferences and resource dependencies of threatened species like M. lagopoda. The findings aim to guide conservation efforts to improve habitat quality and connectivity, thereby supporting the resurgence of this important pollinator.
Key findings
Megachile lagopoda has experienced a dramatic decline since the 1950s, but recent findings suggest a re-expansion in certain areas. Larger and less isolated habitat patches are found to support higher occupancy rates of the species. The bee relies heavily on certain plants such as Centaurea scabiosa (greater knapweed) for pollen, highlighting the importance of these plants within its habitats.
Conservation implications
Conservation strategies should focus on preserving and enhancing habitats with essential pollen plants and ensuring connectivity between habitat patches to support the bee's re-expansion. Implementing later mowing schedules in areas with high concentrations of key pollen plants can help protect the foraging resources necessary for Megachile lagopoda's survival.
